This was more difficult than I expected. I'd already read more than one summary of the book, and was eager to see the arguments laid out in detail. Mauss was writing for other anthropologists and he expects the reader to be familiar with Malinowski and the Potlatch at a level I just don't have. Still, it was a lot of fun and gave me a great deal to think about.

I feel like this guy wrote this book after getting a bad gift. The idea that society’s foundation is in the gift-exchanging spirit is really wholesome but I’m not convinced, and the examples don’t account for large-scale economies

I needed to read this for a religion class, and I definitely marathoned this because I have to have a discussion about it tomorrow, but it was interesting enough.
