Perhaps wearing it's Raiders of the Lost Ark influence too obviously, a solid and entertaining thriller.

Egypt. puzzles. bad guys. This book seemed pretty formulaic, with some fairly MASSIVE unexplained happenings. The writing was fine and the characters were interesting. It was a fun read and I wouldn't discourage anyone from reading it.

I liked it, which according to Good reads is worth three stars.

Imagine, if you will, the very worst Raiders of the Lost Ark movie (sans Harrison Ford and winner of the Rotten Tomatoes award). Action-packed, interminable car chases, plane crashes, helicopters, horrible bad guys, what's missing? Ohh, likable protagonists. Freya, the main character, was the most annoying twit imaginable, whose dialogue consisted mostly of screaming hysterically at people. Flin, the archaeologist nee MI6, was a bookish archaeologist who wasn't really all that well versed in actual archaeology. The only redeeming character was Zahir, the Bedouin, but even he was just a
poorly parsed character. By about page 200 (of a 481 page book), I actually wanted the bad guys to just take out Freya and Flin, that's how bad it was. On top of that, the edition I read (publ. Atlantic Monthly Press) was rife with typographical errors - I can't believe they actually let it go to press. It was embarrassing. I had read one other Sussman book (The Labyrinth of Osiris) and realized at the time that he was not very good at character development and, worse, couldn't write a believable female character if he tried. The Hidden Oasis was MUCH worse.

I haven't read a Murder Mystery/Action Adventure (or whatever genre you would classify this book under) in a long while.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one! I loved the ancient Egypt part of it and the tid bits of history thrown in along the way. As a child I was fascinated by Egypt and pyramids and lost tombs etc so it was cool as an adult to pick up this book.

It was fast paced right from the beginning and it had me guessing until the end. Or rather, it had me thinking I knew what was going on the whole time only to throw a curve ball at me at the end which I always appreciate.

Great read and I will look into reading more by this author!

I truly enjoy the way that Paul Sussman writes. He gets you involved in the story and plot, has well-rounded characters, and the storyline is always exciting.

I was so surprised by this book. It's National Treasure set in Egypt, with a rock climber, an egyltologist and a plot twist i was to tired to foresee. So I give this four stars.

I really enjoyed the first 3/4 of this book. The last 1/4 kind of confounded me - it went off in a direction I was not expecting! An entertaining read nonetheless.
