Beautiful slow-burn, friends to lovers romance. I appreciated the reimagined dragons, "poodles" with glitter vomit

Megan Bannen's Marshals of Tanria series is at the top of my "worlds I want to live in" list, if only for the glittery dragons. What a wonderful, adventure-filled romantasy!
The entire town of Eternity was shocked when widowed, middle-aged Twyla Banneker partnered up with her neighbor and best friend, Frank Ellis, to join the Tanrian Marshals. Eight years later, Twyla and Frank are still patrolling the dangerous land of Tanria, the former prison of the Old Gods.
Twyla might look like a small town mom who brings cheesy potatoes to funerals and whips up a batch of cookies for the school bake sale, but her rewarding career in law enforcement has been a welcome change from the domestic grind of mom life, despite the misgivings of her grown children.
Fortunately (or unfortunately) a recent decrease in on-the-job peril has made Twyla and Frank's job a lot safer ... and a lot less exciting. So when they discover the body of one of their fellow marshals covered in liquid glitter--and Frank finds himself the inadvertent foster dad to a baby dragon--they are more than happy to be back on the beat.
Soon, the friends wind up ensnared in a nefarious plot that goes far deeper than any lucrative Tanrian mineshaft. But as the danger closes in and Twyla and Frank's investigation becomes more complicated, so does their easy friendship. And Twyla starts to realize that her true soul mate might just be the person who has lived next door all along...
I loved every single second of this book. The FMC and MMC are older adults, which made their budding romance not only adorable, but refreshingly representative of people who aren't in their mid-20s. Like hi, the rest of us deserve love too, thanks!!
I wasn't sure where Megan was going to take the series after the resolution in the first book. After all, the major threat is gone.. so now what? But I never would have expected THIS!! Some of the twists and turns in this one were a bit obvious, but some of them still caught me by surprise. Most middle books in a series struggle to stand alone as solid stories, but this one is a unique exception. The storyline picked up from the events of book one, held its own for the entire duration, and then seamlessly set the stage for the third and final book.
Quite seriously: stop reading this review, and go read this series if you haven't already!!

Very enjoyable story and characters. I continue to like this world she has built. Love story about people who are in 50s.

I picked up the first book in this series recently and me, someone who often reads the first book in a series and saves the rest for later like immediately (among other obligations) dove into the second book! The Hart & Mercy world is so fun, like an alternate universe Earth but there's a pantheon of gods, there's soda pop but no phones, there's a letter system delivered by talking, divine (?) animals, they have vehicles with radios and it's just fun.
In this second book, we're in one POV (which I think works better for these two) for a pair that are both in their 50s with kids (and grandkids, in Twyla's case), fully grown, post-menopausal adults with their own fully developed lives behind them. Not only that, but their jobs are adjusted now after the major events at the end of book 1, but no worries they have plenty to do! ...like discovering for the first time in human knowledge, actual dragons! (I realized last year I'm not into dragons, but these dragons are cute and can stay). So begins a fun romp into the mystery of a death and just what's up with the dragons, and an exploration into getting older, but also what it really means to be a mother and a wife amidst the expectations of society and also husbands of varying use.
I'm gonna go eat up book 3 ASAP, loved this.
Thank you to Orbit and NetGalley for the eARC!

I normally seek out and love fantasy with main characters over 40 but this one offended me a few times, enough so that I checked to see if the author is too young to understand but no. It’s weird.
