I truly do not understand how this is rated over 4 stars on average. Someone explain this to me? I was so excited and ready to love this and have a new series and then... Whomp after whomp. More badassassin', less whining and dress upping, AND GO.

I have finally read it after months of the book staring at me from the shelf. And I liked it. But I can't help but compare the ACOTAR series while reading it.

Of course, I'm taking notes that Sarah J. Maas wrote this 4 years before the first book of the ACOTAR series was published and the difference in writing and how she improved is noticeable in how the characters and certain scenes were written.

But purely based on the book, it lacked proof to convince me that Celeana Sardothien is the most feared, notorious assassin of Ardalan. Maybe it's because I have only read the first book. Still, I just hoped for her to be more morally grey since she was trained to be an assassin at a young age, orphaned and traumatized by the death of her parents and spent a year in a death camp in Endovier where she was literally whipped, starved and worked all day.

The beginning was promising, she showed the attitude and cunningness that I adored but later on, I felt the walls that she built for years broke too soon for Chaol and Dorian to see this broken side of her. I don't know, I just felt that given her circumstances as someone who went through so much shit and is still eighteen (a kid), I would be more cautious about talking to people in the castle and letting them know, even the smallest detail, about her past.

I'm actually glad that Celeana ended things with Dorian because I knew from the beginning it wouldn't work out and their chemistry always seemed off picturing them as a couple. I had always imagined them to be great friends instead. But for Chaol, I sense a more mysterious chemistry between him and Celaena that seemed far more natural and exciting for the reader to see blossom.

I loved Nehemia! Nox! and Fleetfoot, of course! I really do hope it won't be the last time we see Nox, I really did enjoy his friendship with Cel a lot.

I did enjoy the plot! And since I have only read the first book of the series, the worldbuilding is still confusing to me; the history, the "alliance" and what the King of Adarlan's motive is? Be a dictator? To have full control over Erilea?

It is interesting that magic is banished, and forbidden and people who yield are killed or hunted by the King yet he uses dark magic all along to gain power and advantage to seal his throne. That is when I'm confused about how Celeana is somehow tied with all of this... With the lack of information about her past to the readers (which I know is the intention of the author), it makes me want to read the second book to know more about what happens next as Celeana begins her 4-year job as the King's Champion.
