Wasn't the most captivating story, but the characters weren't annoying like some others in the genre.
Will continue series, mostly because of the promise in having 7 more books.

I was hoping that this story would kill time, but I wasn't prepared for how much of my time I wanted it to kill! An excellent surprise, I expected a Mary Sue, femme fetale, assassin and instead found myself sympathizing, empathisizing, and cheering for her growth with every turn of the page.

An excellent start to the Throne of Glass series. I've heard people say the first (and second) books are slow, and I couldn't disagree more. I would consider this medium-paced, even leaning into fast at times, but maybe that's just because I couldn't put it down!

Series used to be hard for me to get into, especially long ones because they felt so daunting, but I was hooked immediately with Throne of Glass. It is plot-heavy but also driven by complex, lovable characters and their relationships with each other. In general I love that the TOG series has romance in it, but it is not THE plot, which is also the case for this first book of the series. I think this is a great intro into fantasy for readers who usually are not fantasy readers. What drew me in initially were: the competition/survival aspect + complex, morally ambiguous, and strong female main character, both things that also drew me into The Hungers Games series, as different as these two series are.

A note that I listened to this on audiobook which I found fantastic, as Maas's writing is descriptive in a way where the book plays like a movie in my head. She also writes excellent mysterious undertones that keep you hooked even at slower points, as well as plot twists that even I don't see coming. I didn't know until after I'd finished this book that she wrote it as a teenager, which I would not have guessed, although print readers say this explains the frequent use of exclamation points. Her writing is marvelous here and only gets better throughout the series.

THOROUGHLY recommended Throne of Glass as an individual book and as a series.

Reads like YA, which makes sense considering the author was a teen when it was published. Some scenes aren't fully fleshed out and don't feel fluid, but overall, the plot is fine and the characters are enjoyable.

LOVED this book. I like that it could stand alone or can really hook you into the series. The main character is a bada$$ and I even like how the sideline characters support her arch. Big fan and would highly recommend to most people, though it does get pretty dark at times.
