Great pacing and very imaginative scenes, I enjoyed visualizing it. Great read for Sci Fi fans o

I think I like the concept of this book more than the execution. It's not badly written and the "normal" parts aren't too difficult to read. Bear is also pretty creative with a couple of different narrative styles throughout the book which I enjoyed.

But the fake science parts were a slog and pretty boring. And sadly there is a lot of fake science bits to get through.

The characters aren't particularly well developed, and one set is swapped out for another halfway through the novel anyway, but it's actually the parts relating to the characters that I enjoyed reading the most. Which probably doesn't say anything good about the rest of the book.

One of the worst books I've ever read. Wow.

Started of as a thrilling story of microbial sentience, then turned into a Cronenbergian body horror. I liked parts of the second half, the all encapsulating sheet of life covering NA, but ultimatly it lost me. I liked some of the individual ideas the second half throws at me, but as a whole it leaves me wanting.

An imaginative spin on genetic experimentation gone awry, and a definite inspiration for other, more acclaimed books.
This was my first Greg Bear novel, and I am undecided as to whether I’ll pick up another. His writing style is punchy and powerful, yet the story slows to an infuriating crawl just when it needs it least. This seesaw happens a few times, and really threw off the rhythm of an otherwise tremendous story.
The conclusion does somewhat make up for the unsteady approach, as Bear lands perfectly straddling the line between revulsion and brilliance.
Recommended, but fair warning - there’s a bit of body-horror involved throughout.
