Interesting sci-fi that explores some pretty wild concepts (biological computing, technological singularity, mind transference). A weak cast of stock characters makes it a less enjoyable than it could be, however.
I can't say I disliked this book, but in the end I felt like there was too much going on at once, too many big concepts and radically out there ideas for one book to cover fairly. Doesn't help that too many of the characters are both flat and unlikable. But despite all that, I felt the ideas of the book deserved some merit and I can't fault it overmuch for reaching too far.
Ye gods this was bad on any social front: sexism, racism, fat jokes, ignoring consent, characters are almost universally horrible (one would absolutely be an incel today - the rest not much better). Plot elements and characters come in but remain completely detached and pointless. Scientist is an absolute idiot.
It may have introduced ideas taken on elsewhere, but read those ideas elsewhere - there isn't enough to redeem this awfulness.
I had to read this for a book group.

Brilliant geneticist Virgil Ulam is fired for 'extra-curricular' work, and the only way to save some of that work is to inject himself with it. He could never have dreamed of what happened next.
This was a pretty good book but it's hard to describe the main contents without giving things away. Some of the ideas are massive, although it took a bit of a left-turn towards the end which was unexpected. Not complicated, but I still think it'll need a re-read.

I felt this worked better as a short story, whilst interesting I felt a lot of the atmosphere was lost as it went on and the conclusion did not really work for me.
