This novella is part of the Love in Eden series. It appears to take place sometime during book one of that series. One of this book’s MCs is Jolene, the ex-wife of one of the ranch hands (Jackson) at Black Hills Ranch which is the center of book one, Always Mine. The other, Xander, is a former counselor who is taking a break from his work and ends up stopping off in Eden as this was the site of one of his cases that troubled him most. Of course that case centers around Xavier, one of the MCs from Always Mine. (Jackson is one of the MCs of book two in this series.)

This is a quick read so not a lot of character development but Kennedy can do a lot with a shirt amount of words so we definitely have a good sense of who both Jolene and Xander are. We also have a good sense of what they are hiding from and how their connection shapes both of them. Kennedy manages to convey quite a bit in a short amount of space.

I’ve read all of Kennedy’s books starting with her Escort series. So I’ve read her m/f books before and she does just as great a job with them as she does with her more recent m/m books. Same emotions pulled out of the reader, same connection with the characters and same steamy scenes.

I am a huge advocate of this author’s work and I highly recommend this book as part of the overall series. However, you don’t need to have read book one to enjoy this novella. But frankly, if you are new to this author, I’d enjoy the experience of reading all of her work, in order. She is a masterful storyteller.
