This book held me from the very start to the last sentence. It was the book I chose to read during Burning Man this year, in which I was taking the time to go through some personal growth and reflection on my relationship with my mother. Let me tell you, this brought me to tears, and I will never see my mother the same way. It tells a gripping story of motherhood, feminism, and mental health. As a midwife who left the field, this book provides a jarringly accurate portrayal of the feelings women often go through after traumatic pregnancies/births and the effect this has on their ability to bond with their babies. Not only that, but the author tells a tale of the shame, self-doubt, and isolation that comes with regretting motherhood, or even disliking your own child. These are stories women have been trying to tell for years, and this is the first book I've encountered that I feel truly encapsulates that. Despite being fiction, this book is wrapped in a very lonely and painful truth for mothers, and I thank the author for putting this onto the world.

This book is a withering look at motherhood and the dehumanization and often desexualization of women after they give birth through the lens of a thriller. While I don't usually like thrillers, this book captured my attention in a unique way.

The only reason it received less than five stars was because I found the descriptions of women's bodies almost hurtful to the story Audrain was telling especially one meant to be a reckoning with the role of mothers.

(another library audiobook rental)

jesus mary and joseph this book was a mindfuck. motherhood is so scary and this book only worsened my fear. this was a thrilling examination of generational trauma and, as the summary says, what happens when women aren’t believed.

it was admittedly very slow and takes place exclusively in this woman’s mind, so anyone looking for action or plot should not turn to this book. however, i found the internal monologue, paired with the flashbacks, very entertaining. i was on the edge of my seat the entire time, begging for some closure, some truth.

not my typical read but totally worth it.

hashtag mommy issues, amirite?

I FINALLY read one of the most favored/hyped books of last year and it was absolutely insane and quite honestly, heartbreaking. It’s been weeks since I finished this and I’m still having trouble articulating my thoughts for this one.

What I can and will say is that, Audrain did a scarily good job on confirming some of my worst fears regarding motherhood, lmao. I’m sure a lot of women have similar thoughts about wanting to be a ‘good’ mother and possibly failing at it or having a difficult time connecting with your child, etc. but to actually read about someone living that nightmare to an extent was extremely unsettling.

The main thing that threw me for a loop was the use of 2nd person. I don’t read many books written in that style, so it took some time for me to get locked into the story, but once I switched to the audiobook I was gripped and needed to know what happened next! I flew through this book and was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Final Thoughts: Overall, I enjoyed the story for what it was! I feel like this is one of those books that can be challenging to just recommend to anyone, because it won’t be for everyone. There are a lot of trigger warnings and it’s not your typical Psychological Thriller. However, I think this book does lead to great discussions surrounding motherhood, unfair expectations placed on women/mothers, women not being believed, and so much more.

What. The. Fuck. This book is so twisted and terrifying. I can’t imagine being so scared of a child in real life but this child is … I just don’t have words. I haven’t ever read a book like this. It’s a psychological thriller and is full of the most heinous acts committed by a kid with no remorse. The bigger horror would have to be being the one who brought that child into the world and having no one believe how psychotic your kid is.

I don't even know what to say. This was just a perfect exploration of motherhood and just womanhood, done just so beautifully. And at the same time an incredible fast paced and compelling mystery.

Wonderful book, absolutely want to reread
