This review contains spoilers —

I'm confused why this has such a high review? It wasn't a bad book but it wasn't good either.

I hate when books are very very unrealistic.
If you believe your child pushed a kid off the slide and killed them, why wouldn't you take them to some sort of therapy? If you hear from your child's teacher that they are pulling kids pants down and putting rock in their underwear, why wouldn't you take them to some sort of therapy? If you believe your child cut off another child's hair and saw the fear in that child's face, why wouldn't you take them to some sort of therapy? IF YOU THINK YOUR CHILD KILLED THEIR SIBLING, WHY WOULDNT YOU HAVE TAKEN THEM TO SOME SORT OF THERAPY?! Why are you sweeping these events under the rug?

I knew the ending would end the way it did - It was extremely predictable. I didn't actually hate that part of the book though.
It felt validating for Blythe honestly. I just feel like she was so pathetic. She let herself, her husband, her children, and especially Jett down by turning a blind eye to such horrific behavior.

All in all I feel like the book used such an intense tragedy to reel you in but everything else was subpar

This book held me from the very start to the last sentence. It was the book I chose to read during Burning Man this year, in which I was taking the time to go through some personal growth and reflection on my relationship with my mother. Let me tell you, this brought me to tears, and I will never see my mother the same way. It tells a gripping story of motherhood, feminism, and mental health. As a midwife who left the field, this book provides a jarringly accurate portrayal of the feelings women often go through after traumatic pregnancies/births and the effect this has on their ability to bond with their babies. Not only that, but the author tells a tale of the shame, self-doubt, and isolation that comes with regretting motherhood, or even disliking your own child. These are stories women have been trying to tell for years, and this is the first book I've encountered that I feel truly encapsulates that. Despite being fiction, this book is wrapped in a very lonely and painful truth for mothers, and I thank the author for putting this onto the world.
