I’ve had this book on my reading list for so long and it was my first read from this author. I knew essays about pop culture in 2003 probably wouldn’t hold up in 2021, but I was honestly blown away by how bad all these takes were in general. I think I disagreed with most of what this author wrote. Even if I didn’t disagree, it was hard to get through such self-absorbed (and honestly sometimes rambling) writing. This guy really hates women, is vaguely racist (the Celtics/Lakers chapter was laughable), and definitely is keeping himself at arm’s length from gay people. And he’s just cooler and more realistic and smarter than you, reader. It was really hard to get around the perspective of this straight white man from the early 2000s who really really believes that everyone reading the book will agree with him.
