3.5 stars, a dystopian coming of age novel that uses the biblical narrative, floods, rescue, exodus, plague, death and birth to tell the story of 12 teenagers on vacation with their debaucherous parents.
The world is on the brink of climate induced collapse. The story narrated by teenager Evie, shows complete and utter disdain to “the parents” whose inaction and reliance on capitalism, the authorities and spending their way out of trouble has led to the continuation of climate induced problems and a near apocalyptic state.
I loved:
• the modern day “Lord of the flies story”
• the fable style giving warning of inaction.
• the link to biblical stories.
• the fact that I am still thinking about it.
Didn’t love:
• the characters, aside from Jack were not overly interesting.
• the lack of character development.

Hard to believe one hurricane leans to the upheaval of the entire world, but I get what was meant by it. Many clever parallels to biblical stories that gave the book an interesting touch. Overall a good sentiment and the mediations on God and meaning through a child were a highlight.

This book sank its claws in me quickly and didn't let up. It started as literary climate fiction and then slowly kept evolving as it went on. Several plot points are fantastical and imperfect (but done on purpose, I think), but the writing is sharp and the characters unpredictable. I'm gonna be thinking about this one for quite some time.
This book gave me Lord of the Flies and Leave the World Behind vibes. Interesting read.
