7.5/10 = 4 Stars Rounded Up
The first 3/4 of this book were really quite strong. Engaging, funny, and intermittently stressful. A Children’s Bible also features really strong, likable characters to root for all the way to the end.
However, the final 1/4 of the book felt very rushed, with things just happening around the characters but never really felt like I was WITH the characters, as opposed to the rest of the book.
Also, while the cast of kids are definitely very entertaining and pretty easy to love, they, especially near the end, feel a bit too omniscient, which start to take me out of the story a it. I’ll also say I felt the book maybe played it a bit safe with the characters and their fates, but that could very well be my horror-craving side lashing out.
All-in-all, A Children’s Bible is a very engaging, succinct, and mostly smart read. The allusion to stories and events in the Bible were really fun and very felt like overkill.
In closing, it’s a good’un

Really strong writing but I do not love allegory or these characters all that much.
“Genghis Khan had seen the waves, if you believed Low. The Inuit had seen them. Walruses and Penguins. And now I was seeing them. But who would see them later?”
“They were ideas, and ideas were more romantic than people.”
“What people wanted to be, but never could, traveled along beside them. Company.”

Audiobook
Wow! With this title, I was completely surprised by this book. By the time it arrived from the library, I had forgotten what it was about. Despite the horrid displays of some human beings, I enjoyed the entire story. Interesting and entertaining from start to finish.
