A Children’s Bible was not for me, point blank. That’s all I can really say. The concept sounded intriguing, with a Lord of the Flies meets an apocalypse of Biblical proportions scenario… but the execution completely ruined it for me.
Millet’s writing style was unfortunately something that didn’t mesh with me. It felt so distant, high level, and cold that I didn’t build a bond with the characters or even feel an inch of empathy towards them. They were just kind of there doing things without feeling or depth or thought or anything… just character’s going through the motions and random new people showing up here and there.
Simply put, even though A Children’s Bible was about the apocalypse, it was boring to me.

This one hit hard! It's short and I could not put this down, so I read it in one day. This book is a lot of things, but my initial reaction is Lord of the Flies meets climate change. This book is somehow humorous and terrifying at the same time. Lots of parallels to actual and potential problems and anxieties during this pandemic time.
The premise and Biblical parallels were interesting. Although in reality children participate in drug use and sexual activity, I don't appreciate moderate participation in these activities being normalized. (note: profanity, drug abuse by adults and children, sexual activity by adults and children, gun and other violence, animal death, etc.)
3.5/5 - Imperfect in the world building & pacing though the voice is well-crafted and the ending remains hopeful and reminiscent of “Station Eleven”. It could have benefitted from another 50 pages.
Not at all what I was expecting, although I knew nothing about it other than it was recommended by many. Part dystopian future, part Lord of the Flies, and part something totally else. Would recommend.
Gave it a reread before book club this week and glad I did. I caught so many details this time around.
“So maybe art is the Holy Ghost. Maybe art is the ghost in the machine.”
This novel is truly a revelation. This is the story of a group of children on their vacation with their parents. They runaway from the mansion and moves to a barn with few animals, when their parents let them down.
The children are mature enough to take care of themselves; but how are they going to handle things they couldn't? The plot is so fresh and new. Heartbreaking! I love the narration and writing.
Also it's an alarm to irresponsible parents out there. It's so hard to think what would happen in reality, if children were left behind like this.
This book is definitely not for everyone. I DNFed it the last time. But once you get into the plot, you'll never put it down.
