Meh. A basic mashup of every stereotype.

Some cool hero concepts and backstory but it's not developed well.

Could be a fun read if you like superheroes and zombie stories but the characterisation of women and poc took the enjoyment out for me.

I love genre mash ups, especially when it's two genres I really enjoy. Fantasy heists have been a mainstay favourite... but who knew zombie apocalypse superhero fiction was such a goddamn hit.
With a solid narrative with glances into the past lives of our heroes, this book was just a lot of fun.

So, four years ago, people started turning into superheroes. Almost two years ago, the zombie apocalypse happened. And if you think those two events won't end up being related, you should probably learn more about the narrative structure of fiction.

On the surface, Clines seems to have dumped all the clichés from one bucket into another bucket of clichés. And there's nothing below the surface. So, we get a fire-breathing Superman, a sexy female Batman, an energy guy, a mech suit, and so on, all doing your basic zombie story things: holing up in a fortress, going on supply runs that go terribly wrong, fighting with the other, more aggressive survivor community, and so on.

There's no single thing in this book that hasn't been done better elsewhere. But it's an interesting mix, and not badly written. It's cleanly-written pulp action, a quick read, and fairly entertaining.

PS. The obligatory "explain the zombie science" section is spectacularly awful. I'm not actually sure that Peter Clines knows what a virus is.

FINALLY.... A book that answers the question, "What would happen if there was a zombie outbreak in a world where superheroes existed?" I really enjoyed the genre mashup, and powered through this book in six days. Of course, it helped that I was off from work this week and had two drives between Northern and Southern California as reading/listening time, but still.... I really had fun with the story, and am heading immediately into book #2.

This is my least favorite book in the series so far (still have to read the 5th book). That being said, the books that follow this one, are well worth finishing this one. The writing style of this book kind of threw me off balance and I had a hard time keeping track of things. The second book is a huge improvement and much more cohesive. So if you feel a bit let down by this book, just think of it as the set up for something much greater.
