This was fun. It actually reminded me of the tv show Heroes on some level.
This is set in LA, 2 years after the zombie apocalypse. Our main characters are a bunch of super Heroes, who had coincidentally all developed powers not long before that, and their continued efforts to keep a small population alive.
It was suitably self aware and tongue in cheek. Most of the Heroes were tweaks on stereotypes, but this was actually a nice touch with all the other chaos unfolding.
There are 2 timelines showing a lot of the Heroes origin stories as well as the present day. It was an easy read, and I plan to carry on with the rest of the 5-book series.

Ex-Heroes by Peter Clines is a thrilling mash-up of superheroes and zombies. Clines wastes no time, and he plunges readers into a world of ultra-violence right away. Post-apocalyptic America overrun by zombies isn’t a place to chill. It’s more of a kill-or-be-killed scenario.
The story revolves around a group of superheroes who have taken refuge in a fortified Hollywood studio where they protect a small group of survivors from the zombie hordes. However, when the situation seems bad enough, a vicious gang enters the scene, adding a new level of danger and complexity to the story.
The action is non-stop and gruesome, but Clines also throws in some well-timed geeky and humorous moments (for example, the heroes kill zombified celebrities for points). The superheroes are a motley bunch, and while the large cast of characters can be overwhelming at times, the main players stand out enough to keep the story on track. That said, some characters remain one-dimensional or underdeveloped.
If you’re a fan of zombies, superheroes, or both, Ex-Heroes is definitely worth a read. Just be prepared for a wild ride that doesn’t let until the very end.
Narration: a solid performance.

Amazon had been recommending this for ages. Just couldn't get into it. Grossman's Soon I Will Be Invincible was much better done.
Zombies + superheroes = awesome
The action scenes were fantastic! Even though there were a lot of characters, you got to know them through their backstories, which often added a nice little break from the bleak "now" portions.
The ending definitely left me anxious for the sequel. C'mon, April 23rd!

Zombies and superheroes in the same book. It's something of a fanservice to have these two things paired up, which I think is the best way to think about this book. There's some character development in the heroes, while the mundane normal humans are flat and interchangeable for the most part. But that really isn't what Ex-Heroes is about; it's about badass superheroes fighting zombies. It's a light read that you can't expect too much of, and if you adopt the mindset of letting go and having fun, I think it's a good read.
Overly sexualized women. Annoying alpha males. None of the characters felt remotely lifelike or believable, and the attempts at “witty” banter were just awful. I found myself not caring for anything about this novel. The plot is contrived and falls into every trope from both the zombie and superhero aspect. Plus a gratuitous, unnecessary amount of gore. I’m not against gore when it’s used effectively, but in this book that was not the case.
When reading the sections from female POVs, I often found myself actively rolling my eyes.
Won’t be coming back to this series.
