This was one of my favorite books as a kid because it was the first book I found about a missionary kid.
It kid of molded for me the idea that home was somehwere else. I, like the author, dreamed of going to the U.S. and how maybe that would be the missing piece. Even though I grew up and realized it wasn't so, this book comforted my confused child mind during a time when I was just starting to realize the uniqueness of my life.

The author says this book is mostly non-fiction but had to add in a little fiction because she couldn't remember everything. It is an interesting story of an American girl who grew up in China during a turbulent war-torn time period. For those who love books with an historical aspect, this will be a hit with them.

Fritz's novelized autobiography of her childhood in China in the 1920s. Fairly interesting, and the glimpse at what was going on in China at the time through a child's eyes is well done. This Newbery Honor Book was written in the early 1980's, but I think it would still appeal to middle grade kiddos today.

This makes me want to sit down and write about my own childhood! I love how she wrote it as a story. This was a Newbery honor book in 1983.
