Iris is a woman in her 30’s still reeling from the death of her charismatic father and the breakup from her patronising boring boyfriend. Iris is stuck at her mother’s and ripe for the picking when predatory Hazel and the local cult recruits. Iris moves to the farm and not much happens. The women are sly and silly, industrious and predictable. Iris and the reader are positioned to sit and hope for more. For a debut novel Spoilt Creatures is competent and compelling, but it sat somewhere between true crime and domestic fiction and it would have benefited from more psychological horror and poetic storytelling.
