This book felt like reading trashy reality TV. Entertaining, problematic, addicting. There was so much diet culture that made me sad, and cliches that were tiring, but overall it made for an enjoyable listen.
Three sisters all go through break-ups on the same day. Finola, a local LA morning show host, finds out her husband Nigel is leaving her for the latest hot young country star just a few minutes before she is interviewing said country star (who goes by the totally appropriately ironic name of Treasure) live on her show - and naturally this is going to be a paparazzi nightmare. Middle sister Zennie, an OR nurse, meets Clark for their 4th date only to have him break it off because he says 'she's clearly not that interested in him' and sees no reason to continue dating (Zennie doesn't disagree - but she's usually the one who break's things off so this is unusual. Zennie is a tad emotionally removed, a bit of a loner). Ali, the youngest, is getting married in 7 weeks - only she's not as her fiance's brother shows up on her doorstep 2 days after the invites are sent out to say Glen no longer wishes to marry her and was just planning on not showing up at the church in 7 weeks. Behind all 3 sisters is mom Mary Jo who is constantly berating them for not providing her with grandkids and badgering them to come to Burbank to help her clean out the family house so she can sell it and move to the beach.
What follows is the story of the weeks following this epic day of break-ups, with each character following her own unique path to a better place. Along the way each makes critical decisions that change the course of their lives forever not necessarily in a predictable way, and some very timely and interesting themes are explored. I really enjoyed this standalone by Mallery, the issues it explores and the journeys each sister takes.

Three sisters, three very different lives, all of which are going to change beyond recognition.
Finola the oldest is the host of a TV show, married to a plastic surgeon and about to go on holiday where they will finally start trying for a baby. Zennie is highly skilled OR nurse, single and dedicated to her work she really doesn't see the point of dating although she's going through the motions with a guy she's dated a few times. Ali, the youngest is busy planning her upcoming wedding. Then in one fateful week everything changes, all three women get dumped. Finola's husband announces he's leaving her moments before she goes live on TV, interviewing the younger woman he's having an affair with. Ali's fiance is too much of a coward to tell her himself, so he sends his older, badder brother. Only Zennie's breakup isn't a ritual humiliation, but then she really didn't care in the first place. When her BFF asks Zennie to be her surrogate Zennie doesn't hesitate, after all she has no interest in having a baby of her own.
I wanted to expand my reading horizons which had got into a bt of a rut recently and so I requested this ARC from NetGalley because it sounded like something a bit more than just a chick-lit romance. It was definitely not a chick-lit romance, I would firmly classify this in the women's fiction category but I have to say it didn't really wow me. Having the intertwining stories of the three sisters really just made me feel that we didn't get to see more than a surface impression of each of the sisters, they had no depth. Similarly the male characters were all a bit cardboard. I also had the feeling that frankly not a lot actually happened, there was a lot of the sisters bemoaning that this one was prettier or that one was their father's favourite but not much more. To be honest, I think this is my overall impression of women's fiction and therefore the fault is probably with me for requesting a book in a genre which leaves me so apathetic - a real case of it's not you it's me!
If you are a fan of women's fiction, where the characters reassess their lives and childhoods then I expect that you will enjoy this novel, I have decided that I am not a fan of women's fiction, I like a bit more angst with my romance.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

This book feels like three different short stories that the author conveniently made about three sisters to fill a book. Having said that I enjoyed all three stories. Not a huge fan of the sudden and total turn around of one of the women’s philosophy just to meet societal norms, but overall it was enjoyable.
Sisters Finola, Zennie and Ali all get dumped on the same weekend.
Finola is married, she has finally decided she’s ready to have a baby. Right before leaving for vacation, her husband announced he’s having an affair. He’s leaving her.
Finola is a talk show host and the singer she’s about to interview is her husband’s mistress.
Zennie has gone on a few dates with Clark but doesn’t feel much fir him. She’s never really had strong romantic feelings for anyone.
When her best friend asks Zennie to be her surrogate, Zennie accepts.
Ali is 6 weeks away from getting married when her fiancée dumps her. Actually he doesn’t have the guts to do it In person, so his brother does it for him.
Ali finds herself able to rely on her ex’s brother way more than she ever could with him.
All three women question how they felt about their relationships and what changes to make to their lives in general.
What follows is a time if great change for all of the sisters.

Really enjoyed this book. Everyone deserves a happy ending.

California Girls was a great read. It immediately grabbed my attention and I could not put it down! As a girl who always wondered what it would be like to have multiple siblings (it’s just my sister and I and she is 8 years older than me) it was so great to see the dynamic between these three sisters and how they all handled similar circumstances and heartbreak. A great read on your own or as a book club selection. Highly recommend.

The characters were one dimensional and not believable.
