This book will live rent free in my mind for the rest of my days and I am not upset about it.

Evelyn waugh weaves religion and the theme of childhood through the waning days of english aristocracy and illustrates how the most impressionable topics either fulfill or haunt us for life. These areas ebb and flow in their domination of our perception, causing friendships to change over the years. Because charles ryder has the unique opportunity to “observe” the flyte family from a semi-unbiased perspective (aka he’s agnostic), he seeks to digest and analyze their manner of being as a filmmaker might when making a documentary. All in all, this deeply human and masterful novel is officially on my favorites list.

The decline of the aristocracy, Catholicism in a nation of Anglicans, and
the descent of a man into alcoholism
.

One for readers who enjoy rich and evocative descriptions of setting.

This is one of my favorite historical periods and I usually enjoy books about it. However this one, not so much. This is supposed to be a great book, but I found it to be slow, confusing and vapid. Not sure I'll give Waugh another shot.

Beautiful prose. No getting around the romantic lyricism. Something to be savoured.
