Wow what an incredible sequel to Ready Player One, I literally couldn't put it down from start to finish! I would highly recommend reading this and I certainly will be reading it again.
Ugh I really wanted to like this book. The first was such a fun read. This one seemed to suck away any character growth from the first one and hit too many same notes in a much less fun way (but maybe I’m just still annoyed by how crazy long that Prince section was.
The ending and the takeaway was not my jam AT ALL so that took away any stars it may have gained from the faster page-turner sections of the book

Spoilers below, I don't even care.
Once again, a bunch of pages filled with pop culture references. I don't understand why this book was written, the first one wrapped things up. The first chunk of this book is spent re-telling things we already know from the first book, but the timeline jumps around and makes it confusing when new information is added in. The group has to go on a quest, it's been several years since they won the competition, but our MMC is still in love with his ex-girlfriend. Oh, and yeah, they dated for A WEEK. In the interim, they've apparently been using their billions of dollars to improve the world. Except... they haven't made any progress, so the planet is still doomed. So they go on their quest, cue a bunch of pop culture references, because it's 100% believable that everyone has almost a perfect memory of all things from the '80's and 90's... They complete the quest, a few people die, the MMC gets the girl, again, and apparently they send AI versions of themselves off in search of a new planet to inhabit. WHAT?

I just couldn’t do it anymore. Not only am I so disappointed in the unoriginality of the plot, but I’m so bored that picking this up every time to try to finish it felt like a chore.
There were so many different directions Cline could’ve taken this and yet we’re basically reading the same scavenger hunt from the first book. While the 80’s pandering was charming and quirky the first time around, now I just feel excessively hit over the head with it.

Not as good as I remember the first one being. It was very slow to start. The first 30% was just retelling the first story and stating where people were at the new point in time.
It did pick up, but even the. The action seemed dull. The book was more interested in getting in as many details about the various pop culture references than the actions scenes. This left a distinct lack of suspense in some cases.
I did, however have to go back and listen to some of the Prince songs. It had been so long since I heard 7 and others not typically played on the radio.
Overall I still liked it though. The references won me over.
