Didn't capture the same essence as the first. Also, at the beginning, Wade is a bit of a creepy stalker. Granted most teens likely would have done the same in his position of power, but still.
I don't really agree that the ending sufficiently resolved the issues. It's hard to believe Art3mis would have just changed her mind like that, especially after the kidnapping/holding millions of people hostage thing. Preserving people through AI did not resolve the possibility of someone abusing the system like that again.
Just seemed...off.

Slow to start and a bit of an idealist pandering ending, this book lived up to my highest hopes of what a sequel to Ready Player One should be. I could not put it down and failed to suppress a Cheshire grin every time Parzival figured out a riddle and made it to the next step of his journey!

I really enjoyed this sequel. It had some big twists in it that I didn’t expect. I didn’t find the main character to be nearly as bad as many other reviewers did. It was a fun read.

Decentish sequel. Weaker tone and much less message than the first. Ending particularly weak. Still quite fun though.

I definitely liked the book but I had a hard time starting it. I found the beginning very bleak and hopeless after what the character had gone through coming back into life it felt wrong. I wanted better for him and reading about him and starting at that low point kind of sucked. I started and put the book down a few times before I got through it once I got into the story though, I enjoyed it. I liked the puzzles. I thought they came a bit too easily but they had to for obvious reasons. One should read the book. I wish we'd had more with some of the new characters. I also wish that there was more redemption for one of the characters, but that is all I can say without spoiling too much. It was a good book. It had a satisfying conclusion and I'm happy with where the characters ended up.
An utterly disappointing sequel.
Ready Player One was great because it fun and fresh and thrilling. Because of the story, not because of the writing. Even in spite of the writing. Because Ernest Cline is not a good writer.
RP2 takes the fresh/fun stuff from RP1, injects it with steroids, then hits copy & paste a million times. It's astounding (not really) that this book made it past his beta readers (including Stephen Spielberg) and editor.
The first 20% of the book is exposition. So is most of the remaining 80%.
Bad pacing? Check. Bad dialogue? Check. Wooden characters and an unsympathetic protagonist? Check. 13,000 adverbs in one book? Check.
Blech.
