This book was highly anticipated, and rather disappointing.
The pacing was very wrong. The first 40% of the book was prologue- setting up the eventual story.
When we finally got the action of the story, it felt rushed and underdeveloped. You had the feeling that things were happening because they were supposed to happen at that point, not because the characters had earned it (as you did in the prior book).
There were some interesting scenes and some really good ideas in the story, but it needed a rewrite to get the flow right.

Even being the right age to appreciate all the 80s references, there was just toooooo much trivia and minutia here for me. I wanted to love it as much as I did Ready Player One but I struggled....

I feel this book was a good continuation from the first and I feel that wades personally was much more exposed to show his problematic parts - he was too busy in the last book for me to notice but this book confirmed for be that he’s basically a bit of a know-it-all arse.. but that’s ok and I accept him as a written book character.

I did feel this book was VERY similar in plot to the first and it lacked the intense pull to quickly get through the quests that was definitely present with the first book. That being said it was still an extremely fun and engaging read that I don’t regret!

I was very contented with the ending but would also be intrigued and interested in a third book if that happens. Otherwise, a fine duo-logy!

Ultimately I did like the message at the end. However there are way too many forced references to "historical" things that had to be explained and that made this read very tedious. Also, Too much plot driven and not enough character driven story points.

Not as good as the first book. Lots of information. Very little plot.

I read this in one day at the beach.... and I’m going to wait awhile for everyone to get a chance to read this to post my review because I HAVE THOUGHTS.

Not as good as the first, but still really good. Once again, Cline is brilliant and thinks of so many realistic and crazy ideas that it is hard to believe this won’t actually be the future. I also want to add, that I LOVE Wil Wheaten’s narration in the audiobooks for these books. He is the perfect person to read them.

Not so good

Despite not being as surprising as the first book since it followed a similar format, I enjoyed reading this one too. It was fun and kept my attention well.

An exceptional fun sequel. Such a captivating novel.
