I was ready to give this a 5-star review until the last few chapters. I had a few issues with the plot line and when it tried to convince us that AI and digital immortality is the same as living forever, I had a hard time not rolling my eyes. There is no substitute for the human experience, no matter how well technology can attempt to copy it. Being able to digitally "resurrect" someone that has passed away doesn't seem very plausible, at least not in the way laid out here.
I liked Wade's quest but every turn seemed to undermine him as someone that deserved to win the contest laid out in book one so I question how he had the ability to get where he was by the end of book two. He was not able to complete a single quest without the aid of someone else and makes me question him as the ultimate hero. And finally, there's a bit of a time warp when the 12hr countdown begins. Somehow several chapters fit in the span of less than 10 minutes and they miraculously get out of the situation just in time. There's some serious faults in logic here and throughout the book's ending.

This is a 3.5 for me. It took ages to get going and while I enjoyed some of the story, the ending didn’t do it for me. A mostly fun easy read but nowhere near as good as the first book.

I was awestruck with the first book in this series because it made me reflect on a lot of the pop culture I grew up with, but I did not get the same feeling reading this sequel. The story this time was fine, but centered around another video game quest, and I found myself thinking "again?" quite a few times. Because of the foundation that was already established, I expected anything to happen. The virtual world and over-the-top distopian real world were so separated from today's reality that honestly, there was nothing the author could say that would have surprised me. I enjoyed the read, but didn't love it like I did the first. For me it was just okay, and if there is a Ready Player Three in the works, I won't go out of my way to to read it.
Wade sucks. That's it, that's the review. He's such a chode, it's unbelievable.
Subject matter, once again, is cool, but gd, most of these people (Halliday and Wade) just fucking suck.

I so badly wanted to like this book. I thoroughly enjoyed Ready Player One, even as not a child of the 80s or all things nerd. But the pacing, the story itself... even the incredible detail into the game quests themselves was just off and quite frankly, easy to just skim over. The thought going into the world building is every DND player’s dream, but the execution is off and the ending is just a bad (bad) SciFi movie. I wish I had enjoyed it more, but it just left me wanting more. Or maybe less?
Not as fresh or exciting as the first. Wade is more of an observer than the primary force moving the story along. Even more than the first one it felt like an episodic MacGuffin search. None of the stakes felt real as the main antagonist is absent for most of the story. A lot of intriguing ideas about our reliance on technology and entertainment as well as heady concepts like the nature of reality and what makes us human are treated as little more than plot points.
3.5 Stars. Review is coming, be patient.
