This book is honestly one of the best I’ve ever read. The blurb and the summaries do not fully explain what you will go through reading this, the entire explanation of Marian’s parents, then her childhood, the characters of Jamie and Caleb, all of it is a perfect illustration of her story.
The story of Hadley echoes this too, all that surrounds her and her personality is also wonderful, showing sides of modern people not often reflected in a way that Maggie writes them.
Marians love of flying, her growing up, girlhood, her marriage, her love and her sexuality is all explored incredibly, and I would really recommend this to ANYBODY.

An absolute work of art. A wonderful book, thank you.

I need to put an indefinite pause on reading non-genre adult fiction by mainstream authors from mainstream publishers. Even the most reputedly "groundbreaking" among them have a resigned conventionality that just... exhausts me, and much of their so-called novelty is authors retreading old ground while trying to one-up each other in how "edgy" they can be.

"Until she dies, she will wonder if she could have persuaded him to come with her. Until she dies, she will remember Eddie's small, dark figure on the ice, waving to her with both arms as she circles up. She will always be afraid that his valedictory gesture might have changed, at some moment when she was too far away to notice, into a plea for her to return."

"She supposes there will be nothing. She supposes each of us destroys the world. We close our eyes and snuff out all that has existed, all that will ever be. But if she could choose, she would ask for a lift. She would want to rise from her body and have it be like when she'd first gone up with Trout, as though she were being held aloft by pure possibility, as though she were about to see everything."

This book is a combination of all of my favourite books (Milkman, Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, East of Eden) while still managing to be its own distinct entity.

So much happens especially in the beginning of this book. I defo recommend reading it at a time where you can take it in and also “handle”/grasp a lot of characters and plot; it’s not a light read.

However, it is a very good story, it’s heavy and intense at times, it’s well-crafted and I enjoyed Jamie’s storyline the most tbh. Also, Marian is a pretty wonderful kind of main character.
My big book fear came out though as I thought it dragged a little here and there but I also had high expectations for it which is unfair of course.

Sounds like I didn’t really enjoy it but I did and I thought it was done very well. What a task it must have been to put this all together - so much happens!!
Very glad I read it and think it’s defo worth a read. And it stays with you bc so much happens both emotionally, time-wise and geographically so you sort of remember things here and there which means the author knew what see was doing imo.
