Social science can be fun! The author shares some interesting findings on a wide variety of topics that he has uncovered primarily through big data, such as Google searches. People may answer one way on surveys, but their online searches sometimes tell another story. Topics include racism, politics, sports, sex, and violence. The book is entertaining and insightful.
This was more like a preview of what is to come when it comes to Big Data and a reminder that all those searches might be beneficial (interesting?) in the aggregate. I enjoyed it, especially the conclusion.
I was thoroughly unimpressed with this book from the beginning. Much of the data he focuses on has to do with sex and racism, one of which I think is an important topic to discuss. The way it was written about was incredibly vulgar, and I was very turned off. I almost DNFed the book, but when looking at the table of contents, thought I was almost through the rough part. I was wrong. It was rough through the very end - the conclusion was more about how he didn't know how to write a conclusion than it was about the book.
Overall, I didn't trust his data (I'm typically pretty skeptical of data because I think you can always find what you're looking for), I didn't care for the data he chose to examine to prove his point, and I didn't like this book.

بنظرم کتاب بی‌نظیری بود. من اطلاع دقیقی از کلان‌داده‌ها نداشتم و همون چیزهایی رو می‌دونستم که اکثراً می‌دونیم. ولی این کتاب دید خیلی جالب‌تری بهم داد. الان کمی بیشتر، از اینترنت و اطلاعاتی که ازم به جا می‌مونه می‌ترسم، یکم بیشتر حواسم رو جمع می‌کنم، (انگار که چشم سومی مدام درحال مشاهده توست. نه به صورت شخصی، که یک سوژه ناشناس. که ترسناک‌تر هم هست.) و شاخک‌هام نسبت به چیزهایی که می‌بینم حساس‌تر شدن.
زبان طناز و درعین‌حال غم‌انگیزی داشت که باعث می‌شد با اینکه مثلاً نان‌فیکشنه، راحت و روون باشه و تونسته بود مطالعات سخت آدم‌ها رو به شکلی که هر خواننده‌ای متوجهشون بشه توضیح بده، که خیلی باعث تحت‌تأثیرقرارگرفتنم شد.
ترجمه هم ترجمه خوبی بود. گرچه یک زیرفصل (بخش اول فصل چهارم: The truth about sex) حذف شده که من از روی نسخه انگلیسیش خوندم و اونم خیلی جالب و آگاهی‌بخش بود. کاشکی چاپ می‌شد.
اما درنهایت عاشق پاراگراف آخر مؤخره شدم که گفته بود:
«اما مهم نیست چقدر برای پیراستن نثرم زحمت کشیده باشم، چرا که بیشتر مردم نهایتاً پنجاه صفحه اول را می‌خوانند، چند نکته را می‌فهمند، و بعد به زندگی‌شان ادامه می‌دهند.
بنابراین کتاب را به شایسته‌ترین شکل ممکن به پایان می‌برم؛ یعنی با تبعیت از داده‌ها و توجه به کاری که مردم می‌کنند، نه چیزی که می‌گویند. پس می‌روم با چندتا از دوستانم نوشیدنی می‌خورم و دست از کار کردن روی این مؤخره لعنتی می‌کشم.
کلان‌داده‌ها می‌گویند تنها تعداد خیلی کمی از شما هنوز در حال خواندنید.»
جالب اینکه، من مقدمه رو که خونده بودم و برای یکی از دوستام تعریفش می‌کردم گفت خب دیگه می‌خوای بخونی چیکار؟ همینه دیگه. فهمیدی چه خبره...
ولی هی. من تا آخر خوندمش. بسیار لذت بردم. بسیار تحت‌تأثیر این همه کار و زحمتی که کشیدی قرار گرفتم و دلم خواست خودم هم در انجامشون بهت کمک می‌کردم. ممنون.

Though the book had a few interesting examples and sections, Overall it was a slow read that left my interest halfway through. The examples show the ways data can be used but personally I would prefer a more technical book on data analysis.
I liked the premise, the concepts and (most of) the humor and the conversational writing style. Sometimes after reading books in this vein I think "this should have been a longform article" but I did think it had substance and enough interesting information to merit 280-odd pages.
At times, it veered to closely to tawdry sensationalism, and I noted that the chapter on sex, porn and body insecurities was longer than the discussion of ethical implications of big data. That felt 'off' to me.
Lots of interesting factoids, interesting exploration of methods (but very high level on data analysis techniques overall).

It was good and fun, but some information was boringish.
It is not a bad book. Fairly entertaining and fact-based, it is a great tour in our modern society via our Google patterns.
