I liked all the stories. My favorites included Case of Blackbirds, Troll Bridge, Chivalry and Sunbird.

M is for Magic is a collection of short stories, mostly fantasy, by Neil Gaiman. Although I usually enjoy Gaiman’s work, something about this collection didn’t satisfy me. Maybe I felt the stories were uninspired, just wasn’t in the mood for Gaiman-style fantasy, or perhaps these stories are really targeted to a younger audience. Whatever it was, I didn’t really enjoy these stories all that much and will likely forget most of them pretty quickly, though they’re perfectly well-written and nothing in particular is wrong with them. They simply didn’t engage me the way Gaiman’s writing usually does. I’d really only recommend this to huge fans of Neil Gaiman. Everyone else is better off finding a more compelling & entertaining book.
My favorite stories were Don’t Ask Jack, The Price, & How to Talk to Girls at Parties.

I've only read Gaiman's longer works (with the exception of the accompanying short story to Neverwhere). He has a creative mind, and the eleven tales within this collection reflect that.
While some I found just plain weird (Jack-in-the-Box), others were oddly endearing (the cat who loved his family). My least favorite was The Case of the Four and Twenty Blackbirds; which, while clever in its use of fairy tale references, was just painful to read through due to the style. I think my favorite was the The Witch's Headstone, which covered a young boy just trying to do right in the world and the turns it takes, although it easily could have been expanded to a whole book to address some unanswered questions.
But in all, these were short, easy to read, and made you think, and you can't ask for much more than that. Fans of Gaiman will enjoy.

Probably more like 3.5/5
Good, but I think he’s better at novels than short stories
My favourite was the witches headstone and October in the chair

Love this author, but wasn't into reading short stories at the time. Will definitely give this another chance when in the proper mood.

I want to be honest saying that I do not claim I understand even half of the things these stories can give a reader. yet, I understand that the stories are great and marvelously created. I hope that one day I can get more and more from this book.
