I normally do not use swear words in a review, but Holy S#@*! Ya'll, this is a twisty thriller! I really liked Walker's first two books, but this one has cemented my undying love. Laura was born with fists for hands, or so she's been told, and when her first healthy relationship ends abruptly and painfully, she heads back home to stay with her sister Rosie and her family. But secrets from her past, internet dating, and what really happened the night before has Laura's new start turning from hopeful beginnings to horror movie. Rosie is left the day after trying to find Laura, unsure if she is victim or perpetrator. A compulsive, twisty read that will totally have you binge-reading for hours!

The Night Before takes on a timely and relevant topic and puts a twist on it. Laura Lochner has been unlucky in love and in life. Moving home with her sister Rosie and her family following an upsetting breakup, Laura decides to try an online dating website and heads out on a blind date. The next morning Rosie realizes that Laura never came home, and she begins to panic as she tries repeatedly to reach Laura and cannot. Alternating between Rosie and Laura and occasionally flashing back in time, The Night Before is a taut, well-written thriller that will keep you turning pages until the very end.
Overall an exciting read. Definitely one of those books that I couldn’t put down because I just had to know what happened. Extremely entertaining and a nice twist that gets twisty-er the closer you get to the end of the book.

A heart-broken woman who lives with her sister's family attempts to get back into the dating world after meeting someone online but then never comes home after the date.
It reads a bit fast, but the red herrings are so frequent that it's easy to see the twist (IMHO), especially since the characters are so committed to these obvious false leads. The POV are broken up between Laura, her sister Rosie, and then an interview style POV between Laura and her therapist. Besides the fact that Laura was so insecure and Rosie was so worried for her sister, their voices sounded the same and a few of the "flashback" scenes are more telling than showing.
Also I'm a bit over the style of having vague memories or sort of cliffhangers at the end of the chapters. Like having a flashback to a previous memory multiple times but not having it actually be fleshed out until she's retelling the whole story for someone else...it gets to the point where I'm not trying to find out the rest of the story - I'm more bored by having to keep reading the same parts I already knew about...if that makes sense.
This book is fine, but overhyped IMO. A solid 3 stars.

I read "Emma in the Night" in 2017 when it came out as for my Book of the Month pick. It was memorable and wonderful! So when I was given the chance to read "The Night Before" as an ARC, I was thrilled. "The Night Before" did not disappoint! There are SO MANY THINGS that Wendy Walker does right in her writing:
1. Well-developed characters
2. Interesting plot
3. Fast-paced
4. Believable/fun plot twists
"The Night Before" follows two timelines- "the night before" and "the day after"-- everything came together seamlessly, and I finished this book quite quickly. There was one scene towards the end of the book that I didn't like and felt a character acted completely irrationally, but it did not spoil my enjoyment of this book :)
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC copy of this book. Thank you to Wendy Walker for making such a wonderful novel!

Walker has a distinct way of hooking you. I was intrigued within the first 15 pages and finished this in two days. I didn't want to put it down, so reading is how I rung in the New Year's!
The story is told in alternating views between Laura (who's missing) and her sister Rosie. Laura doesn't come home after a date and instantly Rosie is on high alert. What follows is a whirlwind of a search with more than a few twists and turns you won't see coming. When I caught my footing and thought I knew what was going on, Walker managed to sweep them out from underneath me with the next big revelation she had about one of our characters. This is a heck of a ride, and one I'm glad I got on.
Our characters have all been intertwined in each other's lives since they were children. They all thought they knew each other inside and out. What happens when that facade begins to crack and the biggest revelation of all is finally out? All of their lives are inevitably changed. You won't want to miss out on this one.
