The dialog was nearly impossible to read. It was like if Merida from Brave did talk-to-text.
I was a little apprehensive when I first picked up the book, but I've Kerrelyn Sparks before and liked her novels so I thought I'd take a chance. I'm glad I did. I immensely enjoyed this book, although I'm still a bit iffy about the insta-love trope that plays a significant part of the novel. But is wasn't as bad as it could of been and most of the time there were other things that were more interesting that made up for any dislike I felt for it. But if you know that you'll hate any degree of insta-love, then this book isn't for you.
It was filled with magic, adventure, mistaken identities, spies, and assassins. It's definitely attention grabbing. I love the idea of the Embraced, I've never heard of anything like this before.
There's definitely women empowerment and I like that it was subtle enough not to take over the entire book.

This was the perfect blend of historical and fantasy romance. And it was the perfect book to read after two weeks of being in a book slump.
I really loved all the characters and this unique world. Lucianna was such a caring and courageous female. Her gift of seeing ghosts was fascinating and really helpful. Leo and Lucianna were the perfect couple.
I can't wait to read the next one!

I don't consider these to be the highest quality romances, but they're fun to read. Sparks has created an interesting world, where some people are born with special powers yet are shunned, and where an evil king is in control. I probably won't continue the series, but that's mostly because paranormal romance isn't as interesting to me as it used to be.
4/5 story, removing one star for the cover, the stupid reason they can touch each other and the weird ownership over women (gets resolved but still made me feel icky)
Unfortunately for the book name I fear many people would underestimate it. It was way better than expected with more storyline and action than romance.
The fantasy plot and world building are thin and unevenly developed. The romance plot is not as feminist as it would like to be. My primary issue is that the woman's consent is assumed, rather than being an open question.
I'll admit, I did not like this book in the beginning. But then I was so engulfed in the story I didn't want to stop reading!
I'm so glad I was able to get my hands on this first book in a new series! I do hope to be able to continue reading more about these Embraced girls.
The story of Luciana and Leo was amazing!
This book has all kinds of paranormal characters, and I just love that. There were many parts that had me giggling, and others were I was "awwww"
I highly recommend.

3.5 star read for me. This was my first book by Ms. Sparks and I will be checking out her backlist. I really enjoyed the H/h and look forward to the next book in this series.
