I really enjoyed this more than i thought i would. I usually don't read stuff like this. But i enjoyed it and i will be picking up the next two. :)

It wasn't at all what I expected from the mixed reviews. It was much better! I hope that you makeup you're own mind about the book instead of listening to the reviews.

Has to be one of my favourite books. The way this is written is just incredible. I loved reading it and will be reading the rest of this series, props to Kiera Cass for creating this. The layout was perfect, and the plot just kept thickening. Truly amazing.

America Singer is a 4, a member of the artistic caste, in a post-apocalyptic monarchy built in the remains of the United States. When a member of the ruling family comes of age, they must choose a spouse from the people and America applies for the competition to determine who it will be. She does it, never expecting to be chosen, to appease her mother, to appease her boyfriend, and just to get it over with. But she is chosen and whisked off to a situation that she never expected, but that she turns out to be uniquely suited to win.

There is an interesting idea lurking in this book, but I'm not certain it is worth the effort of reading it to find it. The writing is pedestrian and the plot is predictable. This could have been an interesting look at the use of mass media to distract the populace from questions of personal rights, governmental benevolence and boogeymen, and similar dystopian themes, but the books seems as enamored with its Bachelor-level reality show as the nation it is meant to distract. Oh well.

Not my thing, but I'm giving it 3 instead of 2 because it's not actually bad. It's basically 'The Bachelor' with royalty--the prince of a future United States, now a monarchy after World War 3 with a caste system governing people's occupations and rank in society, has to choose his future wife from a group of 32 young women chosen from among the provinces; protagonist is a lower-caste girl chosen to be part of this Selection, and there's a forbidden secret love triangle--with a vague, as-yet-unexplained rebel movement in the background to give a soupcon of danger at convenient points and I guess try to make it reminiscent of the Hunger Games.
I hope in the next book the author gives more information about the exact who and why of the rebels, and why the country doesn't seem to teach or know much history, to give readers more depth and world-building instead of just the love triangle.
For parental advisory, there are a few instances of passionate kissing, but nothing steamy.
