I think what resonated with me the most about this book is the way that the story and the main character navigate differences in culture and the separation that entails, whether it’s the difference between nationalities or generations or even between the present and past. In every case there is a failure of communication but also an attempt to connect, and ultimately it seems like the book is an example of that connection.

An amazing book that shows a profound slice into many aspects of Chinese cultural practices and perspectives such as the meaning of examinations, paternity, growth, love, and filial piety. These are all contrasted with western perspectives on the same issues, in addition to American southern religiosity. The writing is very readable and Yang's prose is excellent. Would highly recommend to anyone who identifies as asian-american, especially sino-american.

If I were to criticize this book for anything, some of the symbolism can be heavy-handed at times, but it still fits well in the overarching narrative.

I almost DNF'd this one so many times, but something about the writing would keep me going, convinced it would get better. The subject matter (father-son relationships, unplanned pregnancies, queerness) all pointed to something I'd love, but I didn't warm up to it fully until about 60% through the audiobook. I liked the themes of forgiveness, mistakes made & owned up to, and second chances but ultimately a bit of a drag.
