I'm sad to have to give this one a low rating, but the style really didn't work for me - the screenplay-style writing made the book really hard to follow. The plot was ok but definitely would have been more effective in a regular novel style, at least in terms of being able to follow what was happening.

The writing of this book is so unique and meta, I really liked it. I loved the use of tropes and self awareness, really just super interesting. The only reason I gave it 3 stars is I don't like slashers, so I found it a bit boring sometimes. It being an audiobook really helped.

This is a self aware slasher flick that you read. The genre it seeks to dissect and critique has become this exact parody in the years since publication- Stephen Graham Jones couldnt have known he was just writing an actual movie (or Ryan Murphy limited series) 9 years too early. I sat down and read the whole thing in about as much time as it would take to watch the movie. I gasped out loud three times- and good on Jones for managing jump scares in a book. This is a popcorn horror book with a promise of what came after- I think if I'd read it in 2012, it would have felt like a fresh 5 star read.
