I'm sorry to do this but, yeah. This was a 2 star read for me.
A note to future authors:
1.) For the love of all that is unholy, please stop writing your stories in cutesie formats. This time it was written as a movie script. It did not help me engage in the story, but rather was a distraction.
2.) You, as an author don't fall into the trap set by [b:Ready Player One|9969571|Ready Player One|Ernest Cline|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1500930947l/9969571._SY75_.jpg|14863741] author [a:Ernest Cline|31712|Ernest Cline|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1310753539p2/31712.jpg]. At a certain point there are just too many references and instead of being a dagger to drive the point home, becomes a sledge hammer to beat the reader with.
I don't blame you Mr. Stephen Graham Jones, not every book will be a homerun with everyone, and that is ok, but please, future authors, learn from his mistake.

This book is written in movie format which if I had known I would have read the physical book instead of getting the audiobook. As this book is so short the format was hard to follow at first at least as an audiobook. I enjoyed the book but found it hard to latch onto and it felt as though it jumped around a lot. By the time I felt like I had a grasp on the story, the format, and where it was going this book was half over. I think I would have enjoyed the story in a more in third person and if it were a bit longer. However this was a really fun book and I love a good slasher and I especially enjoyed the last third.

While clever in how it pokes fun at and appreciates the slasher genre and the formatting of it like a screen play is well done, this book didn’t do much for me

Anyone who is a fan of horror movies and final girls will love this book. It's written like a movie so it takes a bit of getting used to it but once you do! I loved it so much

Not my favorite of the Graham Jones I've read, but still a fun page-turner. If you're looking for a place to start digging into his catalog, I'd start with "The Only Good Indians" instead. Still fun, if not as subversive as I was hoping.

If you love slasher movies, than this is definitely a book I can see you enjoying. It's satirical and pokes fun at the slasher genre (very Scream-esque). There are a lot of nodes and easter eggs to different slasher movies. Basically, if you feel like Randy Meeks a lot of the time, you will really enjoy our "main" final girl Izzy in this one. I found myself laughing at some of the overused tropes that Jones was using for comedic purposes and it felt completely self-aware that it felt fun to read. The book itself reads like a screenplay for one of these movies and Jones was really taking a risk that I found somewhat worked. However, while I did enjoy that aspect in the beginning, I found it to be a bit tiresome and confusing as the book went on. I found myself struggling to understand the smaller details of the novel, despite grasping the overall larger plot, if that makes sense. This book is a cheesy good time, and if you can move passed the more confusing elements of the novel's style, you will have fun.
