Thought this book had potential.  Plot like was interesting.  Main character is half English repeaer and half Japanese reaper. But the main character is really unlikeable (intentionally written this way) but I found her more annoying than a character you love to hate.

Some things don't make sense within the world as written. I will not be finishing the series.

"Just like every human life, souls were unique and beautiful for a single moment, and then they were nothing but dust."

you'd think from the quote that this book was more about life and death and all of that philosophical shit, but no. it's just a story about an angry girl trying to figure out who she is, getting in way over her head, and losing everyone she loves in the process.

if you're looking for a fast-paced, action-driven, gory, angsty story, then this one's for you.

man, that ending was abrupt, btw, and wild. mc definitely had character development but for the worst. she did not learn anything, lmao.

What a unique, dark YA novel. I was absolutely captivated from start to finish. This is a story of a young woman named Ren searching and fighting for a place to belong in a world that would refuse to have her. It's a story of power and the dark side of its temptation. As a Reaper it is her job to collect the souls of humans until a terrible accident (lets be honest the girl deserved it) forces Ren to flee with brother Neven to Japan. There she hopes to find her mother and acceptance she has been looking for.

I had a hard time putting this book down as I flew through page after page. I was going to wait to meet Baker before I got the second book (she'll be in my city in the next week) but I don't think I can. I have to know what's going to happen to Ren!

I love how the author wrote this story. There are so many amazing themes that you can take away from the book and I can't wait to read the 2nd book!

Trigger warnings:
Spoilerracism, knife violence, murder, drowning, exsanguination, cannibalism, death of a child mentioned

Baker brings to life Japanese mythology in a fantastic debut. The Keeper of Night is just dark enough that it has a great atmosphere but is still accessible for all readers. I adore the way each Yokai is brought to life within the story, the traditional folklore is so vivid throughout and creates a truly unique and engaging atmosphere.

This is a story with no strict hero character, which is perfect for lovers of villain story lines or morally grey characters. Side characters themselves struggle with this concept throughout the boo. The character development is heavily reliant on these themes, leading to a shocking finale that will leave any reader wanting the sequel immediately.
