Contrived writing. Stilted dialogue. Weird pace. Too much telling, not enough showing. What passes for chemistry feels more creepy/leery for more than half of the story. And in general, the writing being so superficial and contrived cheapens the seemingly genuine attempts at good commentary.
The blurb led me to expect at least some sort of commentary on academia, in opposition with the usual idealization and glorification in western society despite all the historical and current problems. But that turned out to be disappointing in its execution, wherein its hinges entirely on the MC's advisor beingsexually inappropriate with her students (also note the lack of commentary on the fact that a woman will (justly) pay the consequences of this behavior, while men are protected and defended for it) and an asshole overall.
