Speaking about the story, I was looking forward to reading this book. It was laying dusty on the lowest bookshelf, without anyone being interested in it.

The plot itself I see as a good one. It tells you about the harshness which was not a rarity in the lives of slaves of the 19th century. Also, you have the romance and star-crossed lovers is *still* a popular theme.

The thing you might not like about the story's features is the unconditional love at first sight, which sometimes came across for me as irrationally strong.
(say who lets you judge love though)

However, the main reason why I came down from 4-star rating to deciding between 2 and 3 is the rushing in the end. The beginning took it's time to tell us about how it began, but when all the hell broke loose 100 pages later, I admit I skipped a few paragraphs, because it made my head spin. A lot of things turned up randomly, in my opinion.

So although the end was satisfying as predicted, I wouldn't go higher in my rating.
