Crown of Midnight started off slow and had me questioning if this series would live up to the hype I’ve heard from friends and the book community alike. And then somewhere around halfway through the book, a turn of events quickly changed everything for the better.

Celaena Sardothien is finally crowned the King’s Champion. All she has to do is kill whomever he wishes for a few years and she’ll get what she’s been after for far too long: freedom.

So off she goes, killing anyone the king has deemed an enemy. Or does she?

Celaena is back sassy as ever, along with her brooding love triangle, Dorian and Chaol. The three of them plus the mystical Princess Nehemiah from far off lands must untangle the mysteries laying beneath the glass castle and figure out what’s necessary to seek justice.

March 2022 4.0⭐️
I loved this book. I don’t quite feel I can award it the full 5 stars but I feel as though we’re right on the precipice of the series becoming so, so epic. I can’t wait to read Heir of Fire to see what happens next in Celaena’s adventure now that she has left Adarlan for Wendlyn and where we may see further use of her Fae powers.
I’m pleased that Celaena is such a strong, badass female. Though this book was pretty bloodthirsty, and at times just given the nature of her being an assassin can make the reader contemplative of how much we feel able to empathise with her character.
The relationships built between characters are complex and well explored, giving them good depth and aided by the author’s use of writing different paragraphs from their different perspectives within the same scene.
The book had a decent plot with mysteries and character development that made me want to keep reading. It gave me heavy Game of Thrones vibes.
I thoroughly loved the ending. I am super excited now that the plot seems to be taking a fresh direction but I’m also looking forward to reading the prequel, The Assassin’s Blade and getting to learn more of her origin story.
Satisfactory ending? Yes.

Jan 2023 re-read - 4.25⭐️
I have actually increased my rating of this book by a quarter of a star after my re-read. Having read the whole series, I actually found that it made this book more exciting for me. There were lots of twists and turns which whilst I remembered vaguely, I didn’t remember them in much detail, so it was exciting to read it again. Still adore the character development in this and the ending was fab of course!

Crown of Midnight is markedly better than Throne of Glass, develops the three major characters in considerably more depth, and better establishes the longer investment of the narrative series.

That said, the treatment of the one character of color that was major in Throne of Glass is upsetting. Maas’ casts aren’t particularly diverse to begin with, and this book’s fridging of the most prominent (and visible) character of color so far does not bode well for future characters of color, if they’re introduced at all.

This is my second time reading this book. Still love it. That last chapter - chefs kiss. There are two things that bother me though…
1st. Mort is literally useless. He could have not existed in this book, and nothing would change. I don’t get the point of him. 2nd. I felt like Celaena should’ve been more upset about finding out Nehemia betrayed her all that time. It doesn’t feel like it fits her character to just look past that and still hold all the love for her.
Cannot wait for the next one.

The last quarter was full of twists and betrayal and moved really quickly.  I’m excited for Book 3!
