This book is SUPER creepy but so good! This is a deeply tragic, haunting tale about the effects of bullying, but with a paranormal, haunted house, ghost story twist which blended seamlessly through the use of prose and graphics.

ADDITION: for those saying this book ISNT creepy???
First: did we read the same book?
Second: I’m pretty sure the target audience is around middle grade, so no, it may not be ‘creepy’ for an adult, but it sure as hell is for a child.

This is a very sad graphic novel that is told from two perspectives. It reminded me slightly of Jane Eyre. A good read but very upsetting.

This is a story told in two timelines. I really enjoyed that 2017 storyline was all done in illustrations. The illustrations were beautiful. By the end, I was heartbroken. The 1982 storyline is told through journal. It was a unique way to tell this story.

This is one of the creepiest books I think I have ever read. I loved the switch back and forth between the diary and the present day graphic story. The black and white images, the blank black pages between written story and picture, and the way the past and present were intertwined all created such a spooky, suspenseful atmosphere that I could not put the book down.

I do have one caveat about the book. It is labeled as juvenile fiction, but I'm wondering if it might not do better in a young adult collection. It tackles some very heavy subjects, including bullying, parental neglect, and suicide. The end is also incredibly grim and nuanced, and it might be a little much for younger readers. Since it is mostly pictures I think parents might assume it's for a younger audience and end up with some traumatized children on their hands. That being said, the story was excellent, and if the kids in your life aren't scared easily and are mature enough for the topics mentioned above, definitely recommend this one to them!
