Rounded up to 4. Not bad. Not great. The characters were empathetic and hilarious and snarky but the pacing of this book was a bit all over the place and there were a lot of plots being spun all at once.

It was nice to read a regency period piece that wasn't about aristocrats.

A fun regency romance, I found their relationship compelling, enjoyed the fact that for a book about a duke the characters were resolutely anti-aristocracy and published seditious material, and thought the bi rep was cool.
Part of this score is definitely for the epilepsy rep. I felt the description of Ash after a seizure being confused and not knowing where he was and having to work out the names of the people around him, as well as taking some time to be able to move were realistic. I also appreciated the references to his father being sent to an asylum as that was definitely one of the things that could happen with epileptics, but I liked that it was worked in how he managed his seizures in the sense of having an alarm system (and his friends/family actually doing real first aid by leaving him to it and then just getting him safe and comfortable after and not restraining him or shoving anything in his mouth!). I appreciated that the Author's Note also mentioned having asked people to try to make it a realistic representation as well as acknowledging that experiences of epilepsy are not universal.

I thought Verity would be the one penning the novels and was disappointed when she wasn't.

Ash is so cute and the whole hairpin thing had my heart melting. Verity... I could take or leave her.

this is cat sebastian, so it’s obviously an objectively good book. i just didn’t connect with the characters as much as i could have/wanted to. but it’s a very interesting read.

Because I read the other two books in this series in audio, I didn't realise this one existed. A new (old) Cat sebastian book appearing in my life is like a lovely gift! I had been thinking about re-reading this series as a little treat anyway. So this seems a perfect excuse. This was a quick and surprisingly affecting read. With all the cosiness and charm you expect from a CS novel
