One day I will have a coherent, somewhat intellectual review written for this and The Gilded Wolves about Western hegemony, the preservation and manipulation of history, artifacts stolen from their native cultures, etc. But that day is not today, unfortunately. Also I love these characters a lot, even though all they do is make me sad.
Fake dating, France / Russia, 1890 historical fantasy.
Usually the 2nd book in trilogies is just „ a filler book” and set up for the third but this book can stand on its own and has such high stakes.
Layla and Majnun scenes & fanart >>> I actually wished this book had more romance scenes and less plot because their chemistry is so good. One bed trope and Strangers to lovers to enemies excellence.
That doesn’t mean I didn’t like the plot. The Plot was outstanding, clever and every the plot twist hit. The magic system amazed me, it’s so intricate. The description were so beautiful I could picture it perfectly.
„Séverin Montagnet-Alarie knew there was only one difference between monsters and gods. Both inspired fear. Only one inspired worship.
Séverin sympathized with monsters“
I love all 5 but Enrique <3. They are so funny.
Finding out why Séverin is so hesitant with Hypnos & Enrique’s meeting with the Gentlemen of the Ilustrados were such heartbreaking scenes.
Séverin needs to join the criminal minds team and become a profiler. He noticed the smallest details.
Eva was Zoya 2.0 from shadow and bone. Sorry. I can’t defend her from the leigh bardugo fans any more. Also that “ thinking you're kissing your love interest but it’s actually someone in magical disguise” also happened in crooked Kingdom.
Hated the reveal of the patriarch of the fallen house. Why are they all so sure that Laila is a descendent of the nine muses ? The ending didn’t leave me excited to read the next one.
Delphine’s character was so boring, the only time I liked what she contributed to the plot was at the very end, I hope she’s not in the next book.
Also, the villain giving them one last night of pleasure together makes no sense. They hate our team and what do they gain from letting them have sex ? Nothing.

Oh, l loved this book. There were moments when it dragged but at the end, it was so worth it. The middle of a trilogy always seems to be heartbreaking and this one is no stranger to pain and anguish.
As the team struggle to cope in the absence of the death of a loved one and with danger increasing all the time, they head off to an ice palace in Russia. This story also had a twist I did not really anticipate at all.
Truly, I enjoyed this book very much!

Super fun sequel! It is the perfect adaptation of period-heist-noir, fast-paced and a lot of fun twists. So many tropes I love, so much blending of fairy tales with legends with history. Really needed this fun in my life -- did I mention it's just magical and fun?

You know, for a split second, I thought I was only going to give this 3 stars. But that ending! Oh my god, that ending! I need to read Bronzed Beasts immediately!
Silvered Serpents was definitely much more entertaining than The Gilded Wolves (TGW). Chokshi weaves her exposition into the story better. There's no abundance of large paragraphs explaining confusing lore and she utilizes "Show not Tell" better than she did in TGW.
Our relationships are all tense right now. We broke away from the established bonds and we're exploring each relationship in a new light. There are some revelations and some betrayals, but what is a found family without any of those?
I, for one, loved the mythos featured in this book. I'm such a sucker for Muses, so I loved the way they were used here. There are still things that I'm confused about that I hope will be addressed in the next book, but I'm enjoying the ride.
