Severin is traumatized. He is a treasure hunter who has lost his family. Hypnos is traumatized. He lost his best friend (Severin) as a child and hasn't been forgiven for his 'trespass'. Laila is traumatized. She isn't a real girl and will die soon. Enrique is traumatized. He is a historian with a lot to give, but isn't appreciated by his peers. Zofia is traumatized. She is belittled by her ill sister. Are we sensing a trend?
Some books blend our familiar real world with their fantasy. This is not one of those books. References to familiar places pull the reader out of the fantasy that was well built until those place names interfered.
The baddies project their identification from their first appearance, so there is no 'oh, NO!' moment.
Angst.... angst... angst....

A good story but I found the first book more engaging. Seemed to skip a lot of pages/POVs in this one and didn’t take a lot in. Hoping the next one I enjoy more!
Edit mar ‘24:
I dnfed the series ages ago sorry :(

Much better than the first one, still a bit predictable. I enjoyed it better tho :)
The heartbreak is real my friends. I adore everything about this series. The writing is beautiful, the world is intriguing and the squad is lovable, maddening and captivating.
I loved this one even more than the first.
Definitely recommend this amazing YA Fantasy Series.
