I don't understand the love for this book. This was a piss poor follow-up for Gilded Wolves. There were so many unnecessary conflicts in this book. In the first book, you are aware that the characters are young, but in this book, fucking hell it's all middle school who-likes-who squabbles. What the actual fuck? The love triangle shoe-horned in with Eva was so unnecessary. The constant cat-fighting between her and Laila was incredibly annoying. I'll put the rest under spoiler tags so I'm not giving too much away, but damn. This book got two stars, one for Zofia and one for Hypnos, because they are the only two constant characters in this entire clusterfuck.
- From the beginning, it is so incredibly obvious that Ruslan and Eva are not to be trusted. They are just weird and sketch as hell. Also, Eva has red hair and a ballerina necklace and wants to dance? Who was actually surprised when her birth secret was revealed? Certainly not me.
- Delphine's death? Completely unnecessary. This felt like just a way for Severin to lose another family member.
- The descriptions for blood forging and how it works are all over the place. Nothing seems consistent and the rules change all the time. If it's convenient for it to work one way, it suddenly works that way. I get not having a strictly defined magic system, but if you are going to start defining things, then be consistent.
- Why would Severin leave the nemo bug with Laila and not with Zofia who is, by far, the most rational and logical member of the group? Or leave it with Hypnos even since he was still awake? Also, if he went through the plan with Hypnos, why did he even need to leave the nemo bug in the first place??
I'm just going to assume that all rationality went out the window for this book because it was a clusterfuck of issues interspersed with so much purple praise that I think I just blacked out for certain passages. Truly, I have no idea why this book is rated so highly.
Will I be hate-reading the final book? Might as well at this point. Can it be saved? Remains to be seen but I do not have high hopes.

"She could not see her hope for what it was, nothing more than a silvered serpent."
It was fun to return to this series again (even though I've forgotten most of the plot of the first book oops).
Likes:
* Enrique is now my favorite character. Followed by Zofia. These guys had great lines and were the most fun characters to read.
* The different cultures and mythologies referenced were a nice touch. I liked it a lot.
* Ruslan was also fun to read.
* The name thing that Laila mentioned was something I was relieved to read because the name had been irking me since the first book because nobody these days in India names their kid THAT!
* Saw the ending coming but it was still good.
Dislikes:
Nothing was too dislikable. I enjoyed this book. Though Séverin was annoying for 80% of the book and I wanted to slap him

This sequel was chock-full of action, character development, and stress (in a good way :) ). I enjoyed it a lot. The characters were all so intriguing yet different, and I was rooting for each one of them. I am having difficulty explaining why I thought it was so good, but I'll just say that I couldn't put it down and when I did, I couldn't stop thinking about it. The end was stressful and left me waiting eagerly for the next one. My only note was that I wish but I didn't feel good about it.
Otherwise, it was amazing and I look forward to reading the next one.
Spoiler
there had been more of a gradual transition in the scene where Laila and Séverin finally sleep together. He just was with Eva and then she practically just replaced her. Also, them getting together after Eva used of the blood forging to manipulate Séverin into 'unearthing his deepest desires' seemed sort of wrong to me in that he was not in his right mind/inebriated of sorts and they maybe shouldn't have done it. He didn't regret it and he loves herOtherwise, it was amazing and I look forward to reading the next one.
