This is one of the best books I have ever read. Learning of the story behind it's creation only adds to this beautiful tale. I vividly remember when I finished this book when I was at school, tears streaming down my face. My Mum walked in and all I could tell her was to read the book herself. She too bawled her eyes out, and it is one of those moments of clarity, of human emotion at its finest, that I will treasure forever. Phenomenal book.

PS. Get the illustrated addition that's black and white, that seems to be drawn with charcoal. It's beautiful.

1 hour 21 minutes - This book is extremely emotional, and almost made me cry at least once. It is a wonderfully well written metaphor for coping with loss and grief, even before it happens. The stories the monster tells are thought-provoking, and the final scenes are absolutely heart-wrenching. An amazing read.

Such a brilliant, raw depiction of grief and anger, written in such a clever and honest way.
I can't recommend this book (and/or film) enough. Such an underrated book.

The whole book is about a young boy dealing with the inevitable death of his mother who has cancer, it is pretty direct and raw in its descriptions of grief and anger and the loss.
