Felt like this book never knew what it was; at times it read like non-fiction and others historical fiction. My other main gripe is its persistence of offering speculatation rather than evidence. The entire final third of the book is speculative and unnecessary.

This book could have been 300 pages total and offered way more than this final product.

The narrative, when actually focused on Yasuke's story kept me engaged enough at times but the rest felt like excess fat and was bland.

African Samurai by Thomas Lockley is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late April.

Yasuke, the African Samurai, as traveling into China and Japan by way of Portugal as a soldiersailor with the Jesuits in the 1600s. It's more of a journeyman's tale than a historical biography, since it covers Yasuke building his skills, meeting noted mentors, making alliances, and learning weaponry and tactics, but it's ultimately wayyyy too dense to really get involved in and enjoy.

Lots of interesting information about Yasuke, the Black Samurai, but also about Japanese history, warfare, and culture.

This book was entertaining, but multiple reviews criticize this book for having no citation and being mere speculation. No matter how fun of a read, a biography that contains primarily speculation does not appeal to me.
