If you're looking to the book to see if you'd like the show, the homophobia and pacing issues are some of the things that the show fixed, and I recommend you just watch that instead of trying to read the original material.

2023: Still loved this book, but boy howdy I didn’t remember how badly a lot of it aged. But I did love reading it after watching the show, and picturing the actors and hearing their voices. Made it even better.

It also bears mentioning that a lot of the humour in this - other elements too but the humour especially - is very British. I don't know how well some of it would translate to readers outside of the UK so if you're not familiar with typical British humour and culture then some things might go over your head. Although given this books popularity this doesn't seem to be much of a problem for most people.
Readers should be aware that although progressive for it's time this book was written in the 1980s and some aspects reflect the culture of the time. Casual homophobia* and fat-shaming and one scene involving firearms may offend some modern sensibilities so keep this in mind.
Regardless I would certainly recommend this book to any fan of Sir Terry Pratchett's other works and anyone who enjoys books with a bit of British humour to them.
Content warnings: homophobia, homophobic slurs (particularly f*gg*t)*
*All instances of homophobia in the novel are portrayed in a negative light but may still be upsetting to some readers
