Winter turns into Sprint. The sleeping animals awake to find the first bloom of the season.

Great story to act out together at storytime. We yawned (for sleeping), sniffed, and ran together.

2016 storytime theme: preschool planters / spring

While somewhat anthropomorphic, this brief book is charmingly illustrated, and a lovely idea of that first sign of spring in the natural world. I can definitely identify with these animals today, and may incorporate this book into life at this time of year in the future.

This Caldecott Honor book shows animals in their winter homes - with a sweet surprise at the end to explain why they are all starting to wake up! Black and white illustrations. Pair with OVER AND UNDER THE SNOW.

This story highlights many animals doing calm animal activities (many repeated words) but the excitement comes on the very last page when they all come together in the winter scene to see the 1st bright flower growing in the snow. An excellent example of visually appealing black and white contrast for early childhood.

I totally love this book. This is exactly how I feel at the beginning of spring! Besides, yellow is a fabulously cheerful color and is my favorite.

Older Caldecott honor book. Sure it's okay. But it's only okay. Some of the art is good, but it's black and white and repetitive. And the writing is lame and repetitive. It ends well but not well enough.
