I remember that the first time I read this collection, I actually thought O. Henry was a woman. I have to wonder if his wife thoroughly edited his work, as was common in that period? Most men of his era failed to write decent female characters, where his were palatable to even enjoyable. Not five-star material, but I'd recommend reading the short stories offered here anyway.
