Firstly; I love everything about Hannibal Lecter.
Secondly; I've seen the movie about twenty times and this was the first time reading this, so when I was reading, I was keeping the movie in mind, and I was constantly comparing them. On a sidenote, the movie is well done, it has the same murky ambiance as the book.
About the book; well written, and simpler than other Hannibal books by Thomas Harris. And I think that was the purpose. Because Hannibal is quite young in this book, more simpler and straightforward writing suits it better. Thomas Harris did a lot of research for this book, and it shows. I love history, so it's always a pleasure to read a book which actually sets in, or around World War II.
The book is very compact, perhaps a bit too compact. A lengthier book would've been nice. I was hooked through the whole book. Yes, the book is a bit graphic regarding violence, but what else could you expect from a Hannibal Lecter novel? And I personally love gore, so it wasn't a "turn off" for me.
