Loved this one. It kept me engaged and guess the whole time. Twist and turns! Do we really know our friends? How about their families? This novel was great and even when I did figure out the story, it kept me engaged to see what would happen next!

Het plot kwam voor mij wat traag op gang, waardoor ik moeite had om erin te komen, maar uiteindelijk werd het ontzettend spannend! 3 sterren.

I have to admit, I did see a lot of the plot twists coming. Pattern recognition really sucks sometimes.

But regardless, I enjoyed the book. I also hold Holly Jackson in high regard because she does not manipulate the reader or lies to them just to gain a surprise effect - I hate when writers do that. No, she leaves it all out in the open and it is for me to put the pieces together or not. I like that.

A very good YA thriller, lots of suspense. Can recommend. In the end I shed a few tears, too.

Very mild spoiler warning

At the beginning of the book i was worried that i wouldn’t enjoy it because it was written in third person and i prefer first person but oh my lord i was wrong. Firstly, considering the fact that it was entirely based within one RV and yet i still was engaged the entire time was amazing. Secondly no book have ever actually made me tense and made my heart speed up like this book did, the scene with Don and Joyce had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Anyway definitely a five star book for me and i would recommend it to anyone who enjoys mysteries with interesting characters with complex backstories.

MAJOR SPOILERS: This was a pretty good book, but when I thought about it more it definitely fell short in some ways.

I read this thriller in less than 24 hours, I just could not put it down. Jackson choosing to set the story in an extremely isolated space made it so much more intense!

I didn’t give it 5 stars because I felt that Oliver being the one to die was too predictable, but also it was the only solution that I feel made sense so I’m stuck with that. I knew from the beginning that if anyone were to get killed it would be Oliver. The irony of him always choosing the safest option for himself foretold that. Although at the same time, of course, he would be the the first to be killed. I think that this (likely common) prediction could have been avoided if the other characters (Reyna, Simon, and Maddy) made some more obviously bad decisions as well and were less selfless. Having only one character be ruthless is unrealistic in a situation with SO much on the line.

The characters were not that likeable so it made it hard to root for their survival. Everyone was so one dimensional! This is unrealistic and boring! Simon could have been a great character if he was more prominent. He rarely spoke- but when he did I really enjoyed it. He could have been a really great character but I just didn’t know very much about him because he never spoke. Reyna also could have been great if I knew more about her. She seems like she could have pushed back at Oliver more often, but then again she never told him she was cheating, so she is more passive. But again, she is extremely one dimensional! This is boring. I don’t even know why Maddy and Red were best friends. I was told they were best friends but I really didn’t know why. Maddy BARELY stuck up for Red. This made me dislike her even more. Overall, I honestly would not have really cared if all the characters died.

Red, girl, get some personality. She was a pretty bland main character. The only thing I really knew about her was that her mom died and she was dealing with the guilt and aftermath regarding that death. Again, one dimension. Again, Red had the potential to be a good main character, but the book taking place over only 8 hours limited a lot of character building and complex characters.

Also who else (other than Oliver) voted for Red to leave the RV? I am assuming that it wasn’t Arthur since he knew that if she left she wouldn’t be killed which would give the group the upper hand. So who was it? Maddy, Simon, or Reyna? If anyone has any predictions or noticed things that I missed PLEASE let me know, I need to know!!

I know this review seems very negative, but I have it 3 stars because I genuinely enjoyed reading it! I read it super fast and I was hooked. But it was so close to being really good! Jackson is a great author, but I feel like she was limited by the time frame. She couldn’t develop characters deeply and this really changes how I felt about the book. The whole point was survival, but I didn’t really care if any of them survived:/
