Rogue Wolf starts off with action, almost immediately, and continued at a fairly consistent pace throughout the journey. Trent, the Captain of the Cygnus, a Pirate Spaceship, and his rag-tag crew made for a lot of fun, some tears, and had me truly invested in the outcome.
Vince, a fenrite (alien wolf shapeshifter) previously exiled from his home world, wrapped himself in his human skin and has been on the Cygnus crew for years. As the years have passed Trent and Vince’s feelings have grown for each other. The problem is that even though Trent is on board with taking things to the next level with his friend and crewmate, Vince does everything he can to ignore the pull he feels, and friend-zones Trent constantly. Alas, the heart wants what it wants, though, and every now and again Vince’s yearning comes through, giving Trent a taste that the feelings are mutual.
This was a fun little romp, yet it also had a sort of depth to it that gave it a seriousness, especially for Vince and the emotional journey he takes. Straight up, Vince is a mess, and readers join the party just as it all starts to unravel for him; past and present collide, and it’s time for him to face it all. I became invested in his personal journey as he comes to terms with what happened to him, and that he deserves more than what he is allowing himself.
During the story you get the romantic tension of Vince fighting his past, and his guilt, to come to terms with his feelings for Trent. All the while battles are happening, the crew of the Cygnus has other ships to steal from, and the rest of the crew are all up in their heads (I mean that literally, as the crew consists of some pretty amazing alien telepathic species that I just adored) as Vince’s past comes back and could destroy them all.
Interestingly enough, I realize that although I was cheering for Cygnus and its team, they weren’t exactly good guys. I mean, they were space pirates and made their living by lying, cheating, stealing and sometimes hurting beings on other ships, but they were just so likable, dang it! So, while they were doing pirate-y things, I was wanting the not-so-good-guys to come out of it unscathed. I always find it interesting when an author can have me so in-like with their characters that I am willing to overlook the less than stellar moral compass they have going on. Or, ignoring my moral compass and being on their side.
Though this was not an insta-love, it also wasn’t a super slow-burn, either. The romantic tension already exists, as Vince and Trent have been together as friends for years, so the build-up to it wasn’t really on page. Every now and again little tidbits about their history is revealed, and it helps to solidify the foundation, but I’ll admit I would have liked a little more understanding about how they originally met and how their relationship evolved to what it became. I got a taste of it, but I wanted more.
If you like shifters and sci-fi, I suspect you will enjoy this fun little space-romp.
